Fields of Research

Our research focuses on the materiality of art and cultural heritage. We aim to explore and understand various aspects related to this field by asking the following questions: What does a work of art consist of in its material and immaterial dimensions? What processes of change do works of art undergo, and what are the consequences for their preservation? What stories are told through the materiality of art and artefacts, and how can this knowledge be understood, preserved and communicated?

Contemporary Art and Media

This field of research focuses on the materiality and preservation of contemporary art and media art. It encompasses both theoretical and empirical investigations into the material and immaterial aspects of artworks. Given the ephemeral nature of many of these works, there is a need for new ways of thinking and approaches that should be developed, scrutinized and applied.

Conservation Techniques

This field of research focuses on the conservation, restoration, and valorisation of works of art and cultural heritage. The primary objective is to develop materials and processes that, while preserving authenticity and considering ethical and historical aspects, aim to slow down the aging process of these works and enable their continued use.

Technology in Art and Culture

This field of research is dedicated to the study of materials used in works of art and cultural heritage, as well as the techniques employed in their creation. It encompasses material analysis, source research, cultural-historical categorization, experimental reconstruction of manufacturing processes and the development of new technologies and research methods. The primary objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the works, particularly in relation to their technological structure, degradation and provenance.
