Fields of Research

The Institute for Practices and Theories in the Arts (IPTK) conducts research in four fields: “Art as Research”, “Artistic Self-Conceptions”, “Auditory Cultures” and “Art Education”.

Art as Research: processes of knowledge production through and about artistic practice

The research field “Art as Research” at the IPTK is home to research projects that explore questions of cultural and scientific history through and via artistic practice. Researchers from the arts and sciences examine the role of aesthetic practices in the context of social developments.

Coordinator: Luzia Hürzeler

Artistic Self-Conceptions

This research field deals with performative and body-related forms of representation and explores self-conceptions generated across different media. The projects reflect artistic self-conceptions both historically and with regard to current processual and performative concepts of identity. Specific investigations operate at the intersection of the humanities and social sciences as well as artistic research.

Auditory Cultures

This research field is dedicated to audible situations, contexts and developments that go beyond the musical. The sonic organisation of the everyday sphere is just as interesting as its penetration through conscious listening. The auditory is understood as a component of cultural and political contexts.

Specific research topics include sound design in architecture, urban and environmental planning as well as sound as a tool in political action and diplomacy. The research field combines a historical-hermeneutic approach with artistic research and discourse-theoretical methods.

Coordinator: Andi Schoon

Art Education

The research field is concerned with the development, penetration and qualitative advancement of art education in and out of schools. The focus is on developing the skills of learners and teachers on the basis of pedagogical-didactic, scientific and artistic studies on art education at various institutions and on curatorial practice. In addition to analyzing historical formats, strategies and perspectives for the research and development of contemporary art education will be developed.
