Interview: Three questions for Xiang Guan

Why are you studying opera?

Because opera is a very rich stage art. Personally, I like to try to bring together different art forms, different facets of a character, and different human situations. Europe is also the centre of opera, which is why I came to Europe to study opera.

What was your first encounter with opera?

When I was in high school, we had a music class and listened to excerpts from Mozart's classical operas.

Which is your favourite opera and why?

My favourite opera is Turandot by Giacomo Puccini. Because the whole opera has beautiful melodies, a moving storyline and incorporates the traditional Chinese melody and song Jasmine, which reflects the combination of Chinese and Western artistic creations.
