Interview: Three questions for Fabio Dorizzi

Why are you studying opera?

Singing is a necessity for me. Even as a child, I didn't really do anything else all day and got on the nerves of one adult or another. I only discovered opera later. The voice is simply an incredible fascination for me, because it is so unique to every person.

What was your first encounter with opera?

To be honest, I can't remember that exactly. It must have been La Traviata or The Magic Flute. However, I know exactly when I decided that I wanted to become an opera singer: I was in the choir of the St. Gallen City Theatre at the time and sang in Verdi's "I due Foscari" at the summer festival. At the end of the premiere, I realised: that's what I want to do! That was a magical moment.

Which is your favourite opera and why?

I don't really have a favourite opera. It's usually just the opera I'm working on at the time.  However, "I due Foscari" by Verdi clearly has a special place in my biography.
