Since 2008, the Bern Academy of the Arts has been conferring the title Bachelor of Arts (BA) and, since 2010, the title Master of Arts (MA). For further education programmes, it has been conferring the title Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) since 2008, Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).
For the assessment of previous degrees, it is decisive what the issuing school was, which title was conferred at the time and what the subject was.
Certificates of equivalence to the Master`s diploma can only be conferred in the Music Division.
These previous law titles remain protected despite the change to the Bachelor-Master-System. Holders of titles according to previous law can also carry the title Bachelor of Arts. A change of title is not carried out.
According to the decision of the former Eidgenössisches Volkswirtschaftsdepartement, the Bundesamt für Berufsbildung und Technologie BBT on the 10th of January 2011, certificates of equivalence to the Master’s diploma cannot be issued in the field of art (degree programmes in Fine Arts and Visual Design).
Should you wish to acquire a Master’s diploma, please contact the Heads of Studies of the Master’s degree programmes to ask how previous study achievements can count towards a Master’s degree.
Whoever holds a diploma without a UAS title from the Höhere Fachschule Gestaltung HFG can apply to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI (titelumwandlung.ch) and request to have the diploma changed into a UAS diploma according to previous law.
Who makes use of this possibility, may subsequently also carry the Bachelor title. However, no certificate of equivalence to the Master’s diploma can be issued for these diplomas. The possibility of converting these degrees into UAS diplomas is limited in time and expires at the end of 2025.

According to the decision of the former Eidgenössisches Volkswirtschaftsdepartement, the Bundesamt für Berufsbildung und Technologie BBT on the 10th of January 2011, persons holding the title of Musiker(in) MH of the Bern Academy of the Arts with a here listed Diploma (formerly Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern) can have the certificate of equivalence for their title acquired under previous law issued by the Student Administration of the BUA.

The process is subject to a fee of CHF 50. As soon as this is paid, the certificate of equivalence will be sent to you by post.

The Nachdiplome issued so far remain protected. Unfortunately, changing them into the new Further Education titles Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) or Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) is not possible.
