Donnerstags-Vortrag #57 Conservation beyond lifetimes
Exclusion and inclusion who do we keep things for?
08.12.2022, 17.00–18.00 Uhr – HKB, Auditorium, Fellerstrasse 11, 3027 Bern
The presentation will challenge concepts and approaches that may be taken for granted in conservation. I will focus on the concept of keeping things for longer and why this has become a subtle but ubiquitous virtue for conservation. Collections can be transient, vulnerable, delicate, consume themselves in operation, or be purely conceptual. There is no ethical requirement to keep things as long as possible and conservation has been drawn into inherent conflict by positioning their role as constantly serving the future. By opening our values for examination, we create space to ask what values are not consistently underpinning our work? Because the playing field in the cultural heritage sector is not level conservators cannot opt out of a choice to take sides on cultural inequality, either we accept it or we challenge it.
